Chapter 2313 - 2312: Stewed Meat
Chapter 2313 - 2312: Stewed Meat
They chopped down two small trees to make wooden poles, then twisted some vines into ropes. Everyone lifted the Thunderbird, chanting in unison as they carried it back to the village.
Before they even reached the entrance, a lot of people from Ling Family Village had already poured out.
Seeing such a huge Thunderbird, everyone was a bit shocked; their eyes were practically glued to it.
Ling Feng felt secretly pleased, thinking he’d finally accomplished something big. His heart was filled with a sense of achievement.
The old Village Chief rushed over when he heard the news. The moment he saw the Thunderbird, his face lit up with joy, and he immediately started assigning people to work.
They set up three big cauldrons to boil water, plucked the Thunderbird, opened it up and gutted it, then chopped it into small pieces. There was quite a lot to do.
Knowing it would take a while before they could actually eat meat, Mu Mu glanced at Ling Feng. "Hey!"
"Huh? What is it?" Ling Feng turned his head and asked.
"Can I bathe at your place? I wanna go wash up!" Mu Mu asked.
"Uh, I guess so? Why are you in such a rush to bathe?"
Ling Feng scratched his head. Inwardly he thought, I haven’t even been home since I came out, how would I know?
"What do you think?"
Mu Mu shot him a glare, clearly annoyed.
Ling Feng suddenly got it, his face instantly turning awkward. He turned and spotted Huzi in the crowd, eyes shining as he watched the villagers work, and called out to him.
Huzi now respected Ling Feng immensely. He trotted over with a grin. "Brother Xiao’er, what’s up?"
"Help me take Mu Mu to my house," Ling Feng said.
"Sure thing, no problem!"
Huzi agreed readily.
The two of them turned and left, while Ling Feng stayed on-site, wanting to see how everyone handled the Thunderbird.
Right now the old Village Chief was the commander-in-chief on the scene. He told this one to set up the cauldrons, that one to gather dry firewood, and others to fetch water, arranging everything in perfect order.
Ling Feng was now a man of merit, so the looks everyone gave him were full of admiration.
But in Ling Feng’s heart, he just felt they were quite pitiful. It was only a bird, yet it made the whole Ling Family Village act like they were celebrating New Year. That was a bit too tragic, wasn’t it?
Back when Shiliu Village was at its poorest, they could still at least manage to eat some meat!
Thinking of this, he mused that he didn’t know when he’d be able to leave. If he couldn’t go in the short term, he should think of some way to help improve life here. After all, he’d used Spirit Possession to take over Ling Xiao’er’s body, and who knew if Ling Xiao’er would still be alive after he finished this trial.
The villagers were very motivated, so in no time at all the three big cauldrons were already set up.
When the water boiled, they splashed it over the Thunderbird. A bunch of feathers fell off on their own, and then everyone got to work. In the blink of an eye, they’d plucked it completely clean.
Without the feathers, the Thunderbird looked just like a fat hog—snow‑white all over and plump.
People brought out tools from their homes and started hacking away at it together.
Soon someone else brought a large pile of potatoes, which they also cut into small chunks.
Ling Feng couldn’t help laughing when he saw that, thinking, They really thought this through!
Isn’t this just the potato stew with chicken I used to eat as a kid?
Looks like everyone also knew Thunderbird meat alone wouldn’t be enough for everyone, so by adding potatoes, they’d more or less make sure each person could eat their fill.
Besides, the three big cauldrons were filled with quite a lot of water, so there’d be plenty of soup to drink too.
Of course, while they were busy, nobody forgot to praise Ling Feng a few times. Their gratitude was written all over their faces, which just made his heart ache for them even more.
Once the meat and potatoes went into the pots and started stewing, the people of Ling Family Village all went back home to grab their tableware, then lined up very neatly.
Ling Feng scanned the crowd but didn’t see any sign of Xiao Xiao. He went over to the Village Chief. "Old man, isn’t the Witch coming out to eat meat with everyone?"
"Well, you can go ask her. If she wants to come, she’ll come. If she doesn’t, no amount of inviting will get her out," the Village Chief said.
"Okay, I’ll go take a look."
Ling Feng nodded and started walking toward Xiao Xiao’s house.
Halfway there, he ran into Huzi coming his way, with a fair-skinned pretty girl beside him. Ling Feng blinked and asked, "Why are you only just getting here? Everyone’s already queuing up!"
"Brother Xiao’er, you’re the one who told me to take her to your house. I’ve been waiting at your door, you know!" Huzi said, looking very wronged.
"Huh?"
Ling Feng froze, then looked at the girl in astonishment. "You—you’re Mu Mu?"
"Yeah. You don’t recognize me anymore?" Mu Mu glared at him, looking a little unhappy.
"How’d a bath turn you into a totally different person?"
Ling Feng looked her over carefully. Her features were definitely Mu Mu’s, but her skin tone had undergone a complete transformation—she wasn’t dark at all anymore!
"What you saw before was my skin disguise. Once I washed it off, it was gone, obviously. You’re so dumb!"
Mu Mu rolled her eyes at him, then asked, "Where are you going?"
"To invite the Witch to eat meat. You guys go on ahead, everyone’s already lining up waiting for the delicious stuff to come out of the pot!" Ling Feng said.
"Okay, then we’re off!"
Mu Mu nodded and walked away.
Ling Feng looked at her back and thought, Looking like this, she’s way better than that little black iron egg from before!
He didn’t dwell on it, and soon reached Xiao Xiao’s door.
He called out once, and her voice came from inside. "Come in and talk."
"Oh."
Ling Feng stepped through the door and saw her in a white dress.
"Everyone in the village is getting ready to eat meat. Are you coming?" Ling Feng asked.
"Oh? What did you bring back?" Xiao Xiao asked casually.
"A Thunderbird, weighs about two to three hundred jin," Ling Feng replied.
"What?"
Xiao Xiao shot to her feet. "You caught a Thunderbird?"
"To be precise, it tried to catch me, but I turned the tables and killed it instead!" Ling Feng said with a grin.
"..."
Xiao Xiao stared him up and down in disbelief, her face full of shock. "You really pulled it off!"
"It wasn’t that big a deal, I just got lucky." Ling Feng laughed.
"If it were something else, I wouldn’t bother going. But a Thunderbird... I’ve heard it’s one of the three supreme delicacies in the Xuanling Realm. I really do want to try it!"
After saying that, Xiao Xiao lifted a hand and hooked a veil over her face, then said, "Let’s go."
"Why cover your face?" Ling Feng asked.
"No reason. It’s the rule."
Xiao Xiao walked out the door.
Ling Feng was speechless and followed after her. "Looking like that, how are you going to eat meat?"
"I’ve got my ways!"
Xiao Xiao shot him a sideways look, then asked, "Did you bring bowls and chopsticks?"
"Uh, no."
Ling Feng thought, I haven’t even gone home, where am I supposed to get bowls and chopsticks?
"Forget it, we’ll get some from my place. Hurry up!" Xiao Xiao said.
Ling Feng nodded, turned back into the house, and went to the kitchen to find two sets of bowls and chopsticks.
Then he thought of Mu Mu and grabbed an extra set.
When he came out, Xiao Xiao glanced at what he was holding and asked curiously, "Why’d you take so many?"
"There’s also someone from Mu Family Fort. She doesn’t have anything to use either," Ling Feng said with a smile.
When Xiao Xiao heard that, her steps faltered. "Someone from Mu Family Fort—don’t tell me her name is Mu Mu?"
"Huh, you know her?" Ling Feng asked.
