Chapter 462: A Small Matter
Chapter 462: A Small Matter
WILOW-Ch.462: A Small Matter
Red Keep, King’s Landing
POV of Domeric Pendragon
"How are you, Ser Loras?" Domeric asked the young man, who still looked a little pale.
"I’m good now, Your Majesty." Loras Tyrell said, "I’m grateful to you for saving my sister... and me. Without you, I’m afraid I would not be here today."
He nodded noncommittally and said. "I heard you plan to join the Kingsguard of the Kingdom of Ashborn."
Loras nodded with a sad smile, "Yes. That would allow me to stay here and look after my sister and her children in the future."
He put a hand on Loras’s shoulder and said, "I know it’s not worth much, but I’m sorry for what happened to Renly."
Loras’s eyes widened in shock, and he opened his mouth a few times even as no words left his mouth.
He tightened his grip on Loras’ shoulder. "Do not worry, Loras. I am not going to judge you for who you love."
Loras looked genuinely touched by his words, and his eyes turned wet in an instant.
"I... thank you, Your Majesty. I can see why my sister has such a high opinion of you."
Domeric was just about to discuss another matter with Loras when he heard a familiar voice behind him.
"YOUR MAJESTY!!!"
He turned and smiled as Oberyn Martel and Ellaria Sand walked toward him.
"Prince Oberyn. When did you come here?" he asked.
"I arrived here a few days ago." Oberyn said, "What I want to know is where were you? No matter how much I searched, I couldn’t find you."
"Here and there. You know I have an empire to manage." He smiled before turning to Loras, "Ser Loras, meet Oberyn Martell and his paramour, Ellaria Sand. Ellaria, Oberyn, meet Ser Loras Tyrell."
"Oh, you don’t need to introduce us. We’ve met before." Oberyn said with a smirk while Loras frowned a bit before turning to him.
"I’m afraid I’ve somewhere else to be, Your Majesty. With your leave," Loras said.
Domeric was somewhat surprised by Loras’s sudden change of mood, but he smiled and said, "Go on, Ser Loras."
Loras then nodded and turned and left without even looking at Oberyn.
He looked at Oberyn and raised an eyebrow. "He didn’t seem to like you very much," he said. "What was that about? No, don’t tell me. I think I know. Is this about Willas Tyrell?"
Ellaria nodded, "Yes, Your Majesty. Most of the Tyrells have not forgiven Oberyn for crippling Willas, even if Willas himself never held it against him."
"I see..." Domeric said.
"Enough of that. I heard that Petyr Baelish and Catelyn Stark were put on trial at the coronation ceremony. And apparently, after the trial, Lady Catelyn turned back into a fish, and Petyr Baelish fought King Eddard after requesting a trial by combat. Apparently, we arrived at King’s Landing after all the fun was over," Oberyn said.
"Well. You didn’t miss much. The trial was more of a drama than an entertainment. And the duel between Petyr Baelish and King Eddard was a complete disappointment," Domeric said.
"I heard Petyr Baelish lasted less than three minutes against King Eddard," Oberyn said.
"Believe me. The reason he lasted that long was that King Eddard was playing with him before killing him," Domeric said, sighing.
Domeric hadn’t had much hope for the duel between Petyr and King Eddard from the beginning.
Petyr Baelish wasn’t exactly known as a fighter from the start.
Therefore, he had first tried to acquire something that would give him an advantage in the duel: a poisoned dagger, a blinding powder, and things like that.
Although no one would accept becoming Petyr’s champion because they couldn’t risk fighting Raksa the Giantess, Petyr had no trouble finding a few people willing to supply him with materials in exchange for a high price.
Of course, Domeric was aware of this from the beginning. He had arrested everyone who supplied Petyr with these materials.
But only after allowing them to be delivered to Petyr. He thought it would be nice to give Petyr one last hope, then take it away.
And when he ordered a thorough search of Petyr and the dueling area in front of everyone on the morning of the duel, the expression on Petyr’s face was priceless. Domeric had a new hobby: thwarting Petyr’s plans one by one, and to show him he’s not the smartest person in the room.
But every good thing comes to an end. And after King Eddard toyed with Petyr Baelish for a while, he severed all his limbs one by one, then decapitated him, ending Petyr’s life.
"Still, it would have been nice to be here and witness Littlefinger’s desperation in his final moments. Everyone said he was crying like a baby while begging for his life," Obery said.
"Well... those who told you definitely told you the truth," Domeric said, and then they both laughed.
"How is King Doran? He should be able to walk comfortably again by now," Domeric asked.
"Thank you for asking, Your Majesty. Doran is better than I’ve seen him in a long time. He’s completely recovered from his old ailment and can walk comfortably again. And the Royal House of Martell will be eternally grateful to you for that," Oberyn said.
Domeric shrugged and said, "King Doran’s recovery is also beneficial to the Empire. So, there’s no need to talk too much about it."
"Still, thank you again, Your Majesty. By the way, how is Tyene? From the letters she’s written to us, she seems to have taken a liking to Dreadfort." Oberyn said.
"Your Majesty’s castle is now called Camelot, my love," Ellaria said.
"Oh, right. Camelot. My mistake," Oberyn said.
Domeric smiled and said. "Tyene is quite happy in Camelot. She seems to be someone who loves learning new things, and Lundenhold and Camelot are definitely the places in Westeros with the most knowledge one could find."
"More than the Citadel?" Ellaria asked, surprised.
"Definitely more than the Citadel," Domeric said. After all, he had gradually stolen and copied much of the Citadel’s resources. Adding his own resources, the Imperial Lands were now the richest and most advanced place in terms of knowledge.
"It seems we’ll need to visit the Imperial Lands soon," Oberyn said.
"I’ll be waiting. And I’m sure my lands will surprise you," Domeric said.
"Oh. By the way, I have a request, Your Majesty," Oberyn said.
"Hmm? What is it?" Domeric asked.
"I wanted to grant Ellaria and my daughters titles of nobility. Under the rule of King Robert, we couldn’t request this, but now that Dorne is a separate kingdom..." Oberyn said.
But before he could finish, Domeric raised his hand and silenced him. "It’s a small matter, Oberyn. You can tell King Doran that I have permitted him to grant Lady Ellaria and your daughters titles of nobility. All he has to do is prepare the necessary documents and send them to me. I will sign them as soon as I receive them."
In a realm, titles of nobility could only be granted by the realm’s highest ruler. The same was true for a noble to legitimize their bastard child and add them to their heirs.
And the highest ruler in the realm was Domeric. Although the Kings of the Kingdoms could grant these titles in the Emperor’s name, they still needed the Emperor’s written approval.
Otherwise, their decree would not be valid.
Therefore, it was normal for Oberyn to sound out Domeric’s stance beforehand.
"Thank you, Your Majesty. I will write to Doran and inform him about the matter," said Oberyn. Ellaria smiled happily beside him.
"Oh, you don’t need to do anything about granting nobility to Tyene. I had already decided to grant her one. She will be one of the Imperial Land’s nobles," Domeric said.
Oberyn was slightly surprised by this information, but then smiled mischievously and said, "It seems Tyene is in good hands. Thank you for your thoughtful gesture, Your Majesty."
Domeric knew Oberyn had misunderstood him, but there was no way he could explain the situation.
After all, Domeric couldn’t possibly explain to Oberyn the true nature of his relationship with Tyene.
"The feast is about to start. Shouldn’t you be going to the main table, Your Majesty?" Oberyn said.
He nodded and said, "I’ll talk to you later. Prince Oberyn, Lady Ellaria."
But just as he was about to leave, Oberyn put a hand on her shoulder and stopped him.
He looked at Oberyn, who smirked at him, "Just a friendly reminder, Your Majesty. Arianne is here as well."
He closed his eyes and pinched his nose at that news. "Thank you for telling me about this, Oberyn. I’ll be sure to post some guards outside my room and lock my door securely tonight."
Oberyn laughed, and Ellaria chuckled as he bid them goodbye and left.
